As the school year comes to a close, I want to let you in on a little known school district- Union School District. I may be a bit partial since both of my children attended schools in the district, but in doing research as a Realtor trying to find options for our clients who want a certain area because of high rated schools, I have become even more of a fan. As I was reading through their website, I came across many amazing things that the school district engages in and believes in. The school district’s mission is dedicated to children, involving the community, anticipating challenges, taking advantage of opportunities, and guaranteeing vital skills for all our children to pursue lifelong learning and become productive citizens.
Founded in 1863, the district has grown from a one room school to a total of eight schools- Alta Vista, Carlton, Guadalupe, Lietz, Oster and Noddin and two middle schools, Union and Dartmouth. The schools are all rated 10, except for Lietz which is a 9. Athenour Early Elementary, a Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is also in the district. TK is designed for those children whose 5th birthday falls between September and December of the year they would have started kindergarten.
Even though it is one of the smaller districts, it is one of the highest performing districts in San Jose. They are known for providing a supportive, student centered culture in all of it’s schools. They also boast an overwhelming support from each school’s community and parents. The passage of Measure J, a school tax measure, has slated the schools to become leaders in 21st Century teaching and learning. Classrooms are being designed with up and coming equipment that is designed to prepare their students for a successful future. Teachers are using technology to inspire their students and enhance their learning. The curriculum has been designed to assure the success of students with regard to the Common Core State Standards adopted in 2010. The new standards are designed to prepare every student for success in college and their careers .
The schools in the district provide many programs and services for their students and parents. A few, but not all of these programs are for Gifted and Talented Education, Resource Specialist Program, Adaptive Physical Education, Primary Intervention Programs,Speech and Language, Guidance Counseling and English Language Development. As a result of the amazing programs, standards, teachers, and curriculum, enrollment has increased more than 1,000 students over the past ten years.
The District sponsors three days of professional staff development during the course of the school year. These days take place at the various school locations. The school and teacher leads work with staff members to analyze student data, make curricular adjustments based upon student need not only learn but to incorporate new and innovative strategies to support student achievement. The teachers also work with their grade level partners each week to discuss curriculum, brain storm and problem solve. Ongoing professional growth is also a priority. New teachers participate in an intensive two year induction program. The staff and teachers are encouraged to take advantage of the many training opportunities on site, at the schools and on their own.
All of Union’s eight schools have been recognized as California Distinguished Schools. Noddin Elementary School has received national recognition as a Blue Ribbon School. Students in Union District consistently meet or exceed state and local standards on standardized tests and locally developed assessments. In 2016, Union Middle School recently received the one of the California’s highest awards, the Golden Bell award. Union was recognized for its school programs that improve technology integration in the classrooms and as a result, improves learning.
As you have read above, Union School District is a wonderful option to send your kids for an academic and social learning experience. For more information on the schools and District, please visit www.unionsd.org.
